Fillings

A dental filling is a dental treatment to repair teeth that are decayed, broken or worn down due to various reasons. When decay occurs or parts of the tooth are damaged, the dentist cleans the decayed or damaged area and then fills the cavity. A dental filling restores the tooth’s normal function, improves its aesthetic appearance and protects the tooth. Dental fillings usually last for several years, but can wear down or crack over time. The lifespan of the filling varies depending on the material used and your oral hygiene. Regular dental check-ups and good oral care are important for the success and longevity of the filling procedure.

Composite filling

In its simple form, it is recognized as “White or Aesthetic Filling”. Its technical name is “Composite Resin”. Most of the ones used today contain “Photosensitive” substances and are therefore hardened using a special light source. Light-cured composite fillings are made in a single session. Since they have a wide range of color options, aesthetically perfect results can be obtained.

Amalgam filling (Metal filling)

It is formed by mixing silver, tin and copper alloy with 45-50% mercury. After the cavity is filled with amalgam filling material, it is recommended not to use that area for two hours and not to chew anything hard for 24 hours. After 24 hours, the hardened filling is polished.

  1. When you arrive on the day of the operation, a plan and an examination will be made with the dentist.
  2. Your dentist will assess the decay or damage to your tooth using methods such as digital photos, 3D scanning or x-rays. He or she will examine to understand the depth and extent of the decay, to see the internal structure of the tooth and to create the right treatment plan.
  3. Pre-operative photos can be taken for control in the months after the operation.
  4. Blood test or some necessary tests may be taken.
  5. The patient is taken to the room where the operation will be performed.
  6. Local anesthesia is given to numb the tooth.
  7. Decayed or damaged tooth tissue is removed. The decay is completely removed from the inside of the tooth and the healthy tissue of the tooth is exposed.
  8. The emptied part of the tooth is shaped so that it can be properly placed with filling material.
  9. The cleaned area is thoroughly dried to ensure that the filling material adheres.
  10. The filling material is placed in the area where the decay is cleaned.
  • The filling material fills the cavity and restores the natural shape of the tooth. The filling material can be of various types, for example composite resin, amalgam or glass ionomer.
  1. After the filling material is placed, your dentist shapes the material according to the natural shape of the tooth. (If composite resin is used, the material is hardened with a special light).
  • After the filling is placed, your dentist checks the bite fit of your tooth. If necessary, he/she makes adjustments to the filling to ensure the normal bite shape of the tooth.
  1. After the filling is completed, your dentist will polish the filling to give it a smooth and natural look.
  2. Tooth photos can be taken for subsequent check-ups.
  3. After the operation, your dentist will give the necessary information about how to care for your teeth and the things you should pay attention to in order to protect your teeth, after which the patient can go to his hotel.
  • After the operation, there are things that you should both pay attention to and do.
  • Brush your teeth regularly. Avoid abrasive toothpastes.
  • You should clean between your teeth using dental floss or tooth cleaning brushes as recommended by our dentist.
  • Avoid hard and extremely hot and cold foods for the first few weeks. This type of food can cause damage to your teeth.
  • Sugary and acidic foods can damage tooth enamel and shorten the life of your teeth. Reduce these as much as possible.
  • Use painkillers recommended by your dentist. Usually, there is a sensitivity time of 1 week and mild discomfort may be experienced, but if the pain is severe, contact us.
  • In case of swelling or discomfort, you can apply a cold compress. This reduces edema and provides relief in case of edema.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep. Your general health directly affects the oral healing process.
  • Avoid or limit beverages that can cause discoloration, especially tea, coffee and red wine.
  • As with any operation, it is recommended not to use alcohol and smoking for a week as it is a time of sensitivity. Smoking or excessive alcohol consumption can lead to changes in tooth color and problems with oral health. Limiting or completely quitting these habits will help you maintain your aesthetic results.
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth can damage the overlying filling. If you have this habit, you may need to use a night plate or a protective dental appliance.
  • For the first few weeks after the operation, avoid excessive physical activity or movements that may damage the mouth area. It may be useful to wear a mouth guard, especially when practicing sports.
  • Each individual's healing process is different. Take care to heal within the time recommended by your dentist and contact us immediately if you experience any problems, pain, sensitivity or problems with the crown.
  • What is a tooth filling?

Dental filling is a treatment method used to repair tooth decay or damage. After cleaning the decayed part, a special material is placed in the cavity.

  • How is a tooth filling done?

When filling a tooth, the decayed or damaged tissue is first cleaned. Then, a suitable filling material (composite resin, amalgam, ceramic, etc.) is placed and shaped into the tooth cavity. Finally, the filling is hardened, resulting in a smooth surface on the tooth.

  • Does a tooth filling hurt?

Local anesthesia is usually used during the dental filling procedure, so no pain is felt. There may be a slight sensitivity after the procedure, but this is usually temporary.

  • Which materials are used for tooth filling?

The main materials used in dental fillings include composite resin, amalgam (silver filling), ceramic and glass ionomer. Each material has advantages and disadvantages and the choice depends on an assessment with your dentist.

  • How long will a dental filling last?

The lifespan of dental fillings varies depending on the material used, the position of the tooth and oral hygiene. Composite fillings usually last 5-10 years, while amalgam fillings can last 10-15 years.

  • How to care after dental filling?

Regular brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups are important after a dental filling. It is also recommended to avoid hard foods and overly acidic drinks.

  • Does tooth filling cause pain?

There may be some mild pain or sensitivity after a tooth filling. This is usually temporary and can be relieved with painkillers. Prolonged pain or discomfort should be discussed with your dentist.

  • In which cases is a tooth filling performed?

A dental filling is usually done in cases such as cavities, tooth cracks, fractures or tooth wear. The filling restores the tooth, providing normal function and aesthetic appearance.

  • Will my tooth change color after a dental filling?

Depending on the type of filling material, fillings may show discoloration over time. Composite resin fillings may look more aesthetic because they are tooth-colored, but discoloration may occur over time. Amalgam fillings, on the other hand, are usually gray and may be more aesthetically apparent.
